The 2018 World Para Table Tennis Championship 2018 – SPINT 2018 is ready to begin! It was officially opened by dr. Boro Štrumbelj, Director of the Directorate for Sport at the Slovenian Ministry for Education, Science and Sport.

Tomorrow at Zlatorog

“You all are winners already, since you managed to qualify for this event in the first place,” Dr. Štrumbelj said at the Opening Ceremony at the Tri Lilije venue in Laško. Meanwhile, the competition itself, which starts on October 17 at 9 a.m., will take place at the Zlatorog venue in Celje.

“Celje and Laško work very well together, the preparations for SPINT 2018 were no exception,” stated mayor of Cleje Bojan Šrot in his greeting and invited everyone to also take the time to go sightseeing around Celje, which received the title of the most hospitable major Slovenian city of 2018 just last week.

Praise from an esteemed guest

“We have been successfully cooperating with the Slovenian Table Tennis Association for many years now and this has been the case with SPINT 2018, as well,” said Damijan Lazar, President of NPC Slovenia on the occasion, followed by the eminent guest Andrew Parsons, President of the International Paralympic Committee.

“I would firstly like to thank you for the hospitality, offered to me in the past few days. I also want to congratulate NPC Slovenia for managing to attract sponsors and partners for this major event,” the guest praised NPC Slovenia and pointed out he has himself organized a table tennis competition before and therefore fully appreciates how much work the organizing team and its chair Damijan Lazar have.

All the speakers agreed: the competition should carry on in the spirit of fair play. 325 players will be competing and the live broadcasts from Celje are to reach about 700 million viewers around the world.

The Laško majorettes and brass band as well as the The Stroj percussion band took care of the entertainment at the ceremony.
